2009 Entries
The Japan Foundation (JF), in cooperation with its overseas offices, solicited designs for original JF furoshiki (wrapping cloths) from students of design in 10 countries (South Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, and Vietnam) on the theme of “blending imagery from the entrant’ s country of residence and Japan.”

Three prizewinning submissions, one each from South Korea, China, and Brazil, have been selected for production as JF Original Furoshiki.

Design Theme: Korea+Japan
The Letters of Korea & Japan

The design is an elegant, harmonious combination of the patches of pojagi (traditional Korean patchwork), the colors of Japanese furoshiki, and Korean and Japanese characters.

Umbrellas and Windows
Designer: Chuan Jia
School: Shanghai Institute of Design China Academy of Art

Incorporating the patterns of Japanese umbrellas, the garden windows seen in southern China, and the glazed tiles on court buildings in northern China, the design is an abstract expression of Japanese tourists strolling around famous sights in China holding umbrellas of various colors as autumn rain falls.

Design Theme: Brazil+Japan
Yemanjá and Carp at Dawn
Designer: Tiago Gualberto Morais
School: University of São Paulo

The design expresses, in the style of a woodblock print, the Yemanjã, a Brazilian sea goddess, and the carp, a Japanese symbol of strength and continuity, dancing at dawn, representing a fusion of the Brazlian and Japanese spirits.
